2019 MLB Draft Division II Recap

The 2019 MLB Draft featured 87 Division II players being picked, the most since 2016 (92 players), and stays pretty consistent with last year's 84 players drafted. A few surprises were at the top of the list in terms of which schools produced the most picks. In past years, we've been acclimated to the likes of Tampa and UC San Diego leading the way in number of picks. This year, five schools shared the distinction for most draft picks, with four. Usual suspect Tampa was included in that group, along with fellow SSC schools Eckerd and Rollins, with Western Oregon and Lubbock Christian also representing.

Lubbock Christian had the best average draft pick for schools with at least three players drafted, at 636.8.

The Sunshine State Conference, for the fourth time in the last five years, had the most draft picks of any conference, and is the most for any conference in the last five years, at 17. The south region's 22 draft picks led all regions, as the Gulf South Conference also had five selections.

For the fifth straight year, the highest number of D-II draft picks by any one MLB team was seven. The Oakland Athletics took seven D-II products for the second consecutive year, while the Colorado Rockies also took seven D-II players this season.

Over the last five years, however, the St. Louis Cardinals have been by far the most D-II friendly MLB team, drafting 27 players from our favorite division of college baseball. This year, three MLB teams did not draft a single D-II player, as the Miami Marlins, Arizona Diamondbacks, and for the second straight year, the Los Angeles Dodgers, failed to take a single D-II representative.

Over the last five years, the Boston Red Sox (six) and the two LA-based teams (seven) have drafted the least amount of D-II players. The Brewers and Indians (nine) are the only other teams to not have at least 10 D-II draft picks since 2015.

There was a large jump in the number of D-II outfielders drafted in 2019. Only seven outfielders were drafted in 2018 from the D-II ranks, but that number jumped to 19 this season, including the first D-II player off the board this year, outfielder Brenton Doyle from Shepherd.

With all that said, here is a list of all 87 NCAA Division II draftees in the 2019 MLB Draft, by round first. Below that is a breakdown of how the draft played out in various forms. Please be aware that all positions and classes are taken from what is listed for the player on the MLB Draft Tracker.
