2015 Division II First-Year Player Draft Season Recap

I know I promised this post a long time ago shortly after the actual baseball season ended, but life got in the way and here it is right before we get started in to 2016. I wanted to put a bow on the 2015 season by recapping what the 2015 Division II First-Year Player Draft acquisitions did in their rookie campaigns as professionals. In here, you'll find a statistical breakdown of every Division II player who was picked in the 2015 draft, their stats across all levels they reached, and any awards or accolades they collected.

Using everyone's MiLB.com player profiles for information, I have taken the liberty of going through each player's profiles and gathering some numbers for everyone to see. Below, they are in order of where they were drafted in June's first-year player draft. Below that, I have ranked who I thought had the 10 best performances on the season, taking in to consideration the levels they played at and the numbers they accumulated.

For those not aware, the USUAL hierarchy of the affiliated minor leagues goes as follows:

GCL/AZL Rookie-levels
"Named" Rookie-level
Short-Season A
Low-A
High-A
Double-A
Triple-A

There are some exceptions, but for the most part, high school picks/lower draft picks will go to GCL/AZL rookie-level, while high-mid range college picks will go to the "named" rookie-level or short-season A ball. Very rarely does a draft pick's first stop include a full-season Low-A or High-A team, but reaching one of those points by the end of his rookie season is spectacular. The "named" rookie-level teams are teams included in the Pioneer League and Appalachian League.

PIO Mid-Season All-Star

Finally, an update to what I did during my mid-season update. The top 10 Division II players who were drafted in the 2015 first-year draft in terms of their performances in their first professional season:

1. LeDarious Clark (West Florida) - Clark was the only D-II player to earn both mid-season and post-season all-star accolades.
2. Kyle Garlick (Cal Poly Pomona) - Garlick was by far the most consistent player of any D-II player taken in the 2015 draft. Garlick shot through four levels of play, including leading Low-A Great Lakes to a playoff berth while hitting .327 with a .902 OPS...then got promoted to High-A Rancho Cucamonga where he helped the Quakes to the California League title, hitting .389 along the way with a 1.167 OPS, including hitting .412 with Rancho going in to the last game of the season.
3. Josh Staumont (Azusa Pacific) - Staumont was named an all-star and put up some big strikeout numbers, fanning 58 in 40 innings between two rookie-league levels, holding hitters to a .154 batting average. His walk numbers are going to have to come down, though. He gave up 32 free passes. When you own a triple-digit fastball, though, you take the bad with the good.
4. Jhalan Jackson (Florida Southern) - Jackson gets the nod ahead of Morozowski based on being named a mid-season all-star in the New York-Penn League. Jackson raked in a .790 OPS on the year.
5. Jason Morozowski (Mt. Olive) - Morozowski earned a Pioneer League POTW nod during the season and kept it up throughout the year, putting up a .848 OPS and getting the nod nearly every night in the OF for Missoula.
6. Steve Naemark (Angelo State) - Naemark again earns some praise because he was a 40th-round pick but still collected a ton of frequent flyer miles, going through four levels in his 21 games of action. He allowed only 18 hits in 30.2 innings of work,  holding hitters to a .170 batting average on the season.
7. Gunnar Kines (Mt. Olive) - Kines gets this nod based almost solely on his Gulf Coast League work, where he was a monster, striking out 28 hitters and walking only 1 in 31.1 innings of work.
8. Cody Ponce (Cal Poly Pomona) - Another CPP guy who played a whole lot of baseball in 2015. Ponce, for the most part, lived up to his high draft pick and performed well, particularly with Low-A Wisconsin where he was a bright spot on a pretty bad team.
9. Ryan Helsley (Northeastern State) - Helsley was named a rookie all-star after putting up an ERA right around 2 in 40.1 innings of work with a .221 batting average against.
10. Keegan Long (St. Joseph's (Ind.)) - Although it was work as a reliever, Long dominated hitters all season at rookie-level Missoula. He struck out 36 in only 26.2 innings of work and held an ERA under 1 on the season in 23 appearances, with a .148 batting average against.

Ryan Castellanos and a few others were extremely productive in their professional debut seasons, but it is tough to include relief pitchers on here with not much playing time when you had so many great Division II ambassadors entering the professional ranks in 2015. We wish nothing but the best to everyone who honed their skills in Division II in their quest to reach the big leagues.
