2015 D-II Draft Pick Updates (Through 7/31)

Long time, no talk everyone! I wanted to take this time to update everyone on how all of the NCAA Division II 2015 MLB Draft Picks are doing through the month of July, and rank the top 10 in order of their performances so far this season!

Using everyone's MiLB.com player profiles for information, I have taken the liberty of going through each player's profiles and gathering some numbers for everyone to see. Below, they are in order of where they were drafted in June's first-year player draft. Below that, I have ranked who I think have been the top 10 performers so far based on the levels they have played at and the numbers they have accumulated thus far. There are a few players who do not have profiles yet, and I am assuming that is because they did not sign with their respective professional teams (if they were non-seniors) or because they are injured and not playing this professional season.

Some players may have August 1st games included. Most are through July 31st.

For those not aware, the USUAL hierarchy of the affiliated minor leagues goes as follows:

GCL/AZL Rookie-levels
"Named" Rookie-level
Short-Season A
Low-A
High-A
Double-A
Triple-A

There are some exceptions, but for the most part, high school picks/lower draft picks will go to GCL/AZL rookie-level, while high-mid range college picks will go to the "named" rookie-level or short-season A ball. Very rarely does a draft pick's first stop include a full-season Low-A or High-A team, but reaching one of those points by the end of his rookie season is spectacular. The "named" rookie-level teams are teams included in the Pioneer League and Appalachian League.

Finally, in strictly my own personal opinion, balancing both the level reached and performance, here is my ranking of the top 10 Division II draft picks so far this season:

1. LeDarious Clark (West Florida) - Clark is raking in short-season Spokane, and was named a league all-star at the midway point in the season.
2. Cody Ponce (Cal Poly Pomona) - Probably to be expected, but Ponce quickly found his way to the full-season Low-A level, tied for the second-highest level any D-II player from this year's draft has reached, and is putting up great numbers as well.
3. Ryan Castellanos (Nova Southeastern) - Castellanos has been mowing hitters down and even got a cameo with High-A Lakeland earlier this year where he pitched four hitless innings in two outings, tied for the highest level any D-II player from this year's draft has reached with his NSU teammate Alex Fernandez, who made a cameo as well at High-A (though Fernandez only got 2 AB's there).
4. Kyle Garlick (Cal Poly Pomona) - CPP is showing very well so far this professional season, with Ponce and Garlick leading the way. Garlick quickly cruised through the first two levels of his rookie season and now finds himself batting cleanup for a Low-A team that will be heading to the playoffs at the end of the season.
5. Jason Morozowski (Mt. Olive) - Morozowski is cleaning up at rookie-level Missoula so far this season.
6. Jhalan Jackson (Florida Southern) - It was like splitting hairs comparing Jackson with Morozowski, as they are both putting up similar numbers at the same level currently.
7. Steve Naemark (Angelo State) - Naemark earns some extra points from me for being a 40th-round pick despite being probably the most dominant D-II pitcher of the 2015 season. He has shown that in his time in the professional ranks already, mowing through hitters at both the rookie-league and short-season levels.
8. Ryan Helsley (Northeastern St.) - Helsley was a bit of an unknown at draft time, but he has certainly made his name known, holding down a sub-1 ERA mainly as a starter in the short-season league this year.
9. Keegan Long (St. Joseph's) - Long is holding hitters to a sub-.200 average so far at rookie-level Missoula and is striking out better than a batter per inning.
10. Justin Donatella (UC San Diego) - Donatella, another dominating pitcher from the 2015 D-II season, hasn't been promoted from the AZL yet, but it has to be coming. He is an unfair matchup so far for hitters, allowing only two hits in seven innings of work with no runs allowed and eight strikeouts.
Bonus 11/12. Gunnar Kines (Mt. Olive) and Aaron Cox (Gannon) - Both are putting up great numbers, and Kines even had a stint at Low-A earlier this year, but I ranked them behind Long/Donatella purely because of a lower strikeout ratio. Still sitting hitters down on a regular basis.
